Optimizing a Virtualized Desktop Environment with Frontline Performance Intelligence

Virtualization is a key disruptive technology for IT requiring radical changes in thinking and operating procedures to better plan, manage, provision and orchestrate resources throughout the enterprise.

According to a recent research by Gartner, virtualization will be the biggest driver for IT infrastructure and operations spending over the next several years.  The report, “Virtualization Impact on x86 Server Shipments”*, emphasizes that virtualization is the “highest-impact trend” for IT through 2012, predicting it will determine how IT administrators manage, buy, deploy, and plan their future strategies. Gartner also projects that more than four million virtual machines will be installed on x86 servers by next year – which is almost as many virtual PCs in operation today.  Clearly virtualization is a major technology shift.  As a result, it requires visionary changes in thinking and operating procedures to better plan, manage, provision, and orchestrate resources throughout the enterprise.

In an environment where system metrics are meaningless, real user experience becomes the only quantifiable measurement to manage against.

In SBC and VDI environments traditional metrics like CPU, memory, and network utilization become marginal indicators of performance: the crucial need is for visibility into actual end user experiences.  By capturing real end user experience with application performance, melding that together with application usage trends, and including each desktop’s resource consumption, organizations gain the visibility required to make real-time, right-time decisions to support growing virtualization projects.  Using fact-based assessments to empirically understand the resources required to support multiple users, each running a variety of different applications across virtual desktop servers, greatly improves an organization’s ability to choose the best virtualization solution for their needs.Aternity turns every PC - whether real or virtual - into a self-monitoring platform that is end user experience aware.

The Aternity Frontline Performance Intelligence Platform for Desktop Virtualization provides the Desktop Virtualization with Aternityvisibility IT and Line of Business (LOB) management need in order to make strategic business decisions that improve end user experience. By harnessing end user experience as the primary metric for optimizing the mapping of guest virtual machines in VDI scenarios, and as a key driver for virtualization resource orchestration, the Aternity Frontline Performance Intelligence Platform enables dramatic increase of virtualization density, boosts agility in adding new application types to the VDI pool, and significantly reduces the hardware and management costs typically associated with manual or semi-automatic resource allocation.
